Status
Fertilisers are in CBAM scope. CBAMWorks is building fertiliser support after iron & steel and aluminium. There is a reported additional +1 % mark-up on fertiliser default values, but this detail is still being clarified in official guidance and we don’t publish the figure until it’s settled.
What will be different
- Both direct and indirect emissions count. Fertiliser production is grid-electricity-intensive, so electricity use will be in-scope data.
- Nitrogen chemistry process emissions. Ammonia production (Haber-Bosch), nitric acid production (N₂O emissions), and urea synthesis each have their own process-emission lines.
- Precursor handling is specific to the production route. The engine needs the ammonia precursor origin and emissions for downstream products.
What to ask your fertiliser supplier today
- 12 months of fuel bills (natural gas is the main input for ammonia).
- 12 months of electricity bills.
- Production in tonnes by product type (ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate, calcium ammonium nitrate, NPK blends).
- N₂O abatement: whether tertiary catalytic abatement is installed at nitric acid plants, which can cut N₂O emissions dramatically.
- Ammonia precursor origin and emissions for downstream nitrogen fertilisers.
Common questions
- What about phosphate and potash fertilisers? CBAM’s fertiliser scope focuses on nitrogen-based products; phosphate and potash are generally not in scope. Check the CN heading against the current Annex I list.
- Does the +1 % apply to all fertilisers? Still being clarified in official guidance. Until the text is settled, we flag the uncertainty in-dashboard but don’t publish a numeric claim.
Timeline
- Now: manual data collection with a template.
- Q2 2027: fertiliser support in CBAMWorks (planned).
